Oodles of Doodles
Some 2D stuff for a change. These are some sketches inspired for a short film I'm making with some friends of mine from DigiPen. It's been too long since I really focused on doing finished 2D images so I'll be practicing more.

Well, well, well... Look have we here.
I had the pleasure of meeting two companies I reallywant to work for at GDC - Telltale Games and Riot Games. And further to my surprise and enthusiasm, I learned their both hiring and liked my work. But they both suggested, when I apply once I graduate, to include more humans and characters (since I've been predisposed to monsters and gooey creatures.)
And - not too unlike one another - both wanted a character in THEIR style to showcase. I also met someone really cool at GDC; another amazing artist by the name of Johan Friis. You can check his work here: www.johanfriisart.blogspot.com.
I took a look at his porfolio and noticed this fine illustration:

I then decided I NEEEEEDED to model him. The design, silhouette, the look of the character is just awesome.

This was the first iteration I sent to Johan. The idea was there, but there were plenty of elements that needed refining. His head was too small, the backpack needed to be refined more, and in general he was pushing the already small polygon limit I put myself at (for an MMO asset.)
This was my first pass at the textures too. I tried to make it fit in the League of Legends style, but it didn't look hand painted enough. I was using reference for the materials of the coat and hair on his face and it showed too much.

Through some great advice from my teacher Suzanne Kuafman and my AWESOME classmates at DigiPen, I was able to refine the topology and silhouette to match what I wanted. I also experimented with a program called 3D coat that allows you to paint on textures in real time. With it's real time applicants to photoshop and seamlessly saving textures back and forth, it was a real time saver and did a wonderful job getting the look I wanted.
